Dear Candidate,

Thank you for considering joining the PDSA Council as a Trustee and here is some background to assist your application.

At PDSA, we exist, formally, to support the relief of poverty.  Our unique approach to this objective is to offer free or low-cost treatment when owners can’t afford the full cost of veterinary care. We believe that people living in financial hardship should not be denied the companionship and emotional support that a pet offers, simply because they cannot afford veterinary costs. This belief has sustained the charity through the 108 years of its existence, commencing with our founder’s work in the East End of London during the First World War.

Through our 45 Pet Hospitals, we currently treat 450,000 sick and injured pets every year, a fact that no other charity matches either in scale or impact. This incredible impact on the pets of people in need, gives us a sense that we are seen by our clients as theirs’ – the people’s vet – see our video.

Our well-respected annual Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report underscores our national presence, expertise and recognition in furthering our other objective, that being to enhance animal welfare across the UK. It also highlights our ambition is to be present in every community of greatest need across the UK.

PDSA operates without Government funding, relying solely on the generosity of individuals, through  donations and legacies, which together with our retail and trading operations, cover the c£80 million annual cost of our veterinary service. We maintain a strong focus on being efficient in all areas of the organisation thus maximising the effectiveness of every pound we raise, while never forgetting that it is the motivation and sense of purpose of all our 2000 people that drives our success.

Our Trustees play a vital role in supporting the work of this amazing and rewarding Charity. As a member of PDSA’s Council, our Trustees are responsible for overseeing, challenging, and guarding the development of the strategic and financial plans which drive the work of the Charity.

We are seeking two new Trustees to join our Council.

  1. A property investment specialist who can help inform our strategic decision-making and help us leverage and develop our diverse property portfolio to support our work.
  2. A senior fundraiser, or, potentially a key account director, who can help shape our strategic approach and relationship development with Philanthropists, Major Donors, Trusts & Foundations, and Corporations.

In order to maximise success, all our Trustees need to have a strong personal motivation to the cause and also an empathy with our clients. Successful candidates will join a committed and engaged team of Trustees and thus it will be essential to have the proven ability to work closely with others having differing skills and experiences.

We welcome applications from individuals of various backgrounds and experiences, particularly those with direct or indirect personal experience of financial hardship.

If you are eager to make a real difference, we look forward to hearing from you.

Wishing you all the best in your application.
